Botanic gardens decorated with colorful glass murals are located in the city of Toluca, Mexico. In 1975, the year that the central market closed, Leopoldo Flores wanted to save this historic place by transforming it into the majestic garden that is today. By convincing the topical authorities the local artist managed to realize his idea and renamed the place “Cosmovitral”. He depicted through his work the relationship between man and universe.
The gardens, that receive thousands of visitors every year, were decorated with 45 tons of blown glass and 25 tons of lead used to create expansive mosaic murals. The interior is filled with over 500 plants from around the globe while in order to withstand the new artistic additions, the construction had to be strengthen with reinforced with 75 tons of metal support. One of the Cosmovitral’s murals, the famous Hombre Sole meaning Sun Man has become synonymous with the city of Toluca.
