Known for his being an activist and an artist, the 57-year-old Chinese Ai Weiwei surprizes with his new fashion project. It’s a series of photos for V magazine in which he throws paint all over the pieces of 14 up-and-coming designers of Dover Street Market (Dover Street Market’s stable of emerging talents, created by Comme des Garcons, began in London and has since expanded to include locations in Tokyo and New York). And the results are in: unique, sarcastic, violent but also joyful at the sae time.

“I don’t know if it’s sad or positive that he decided to do the project this way, but the outcome is beautiful.” says one of the Dover Street Market designers. These photographs of our clothes “raise questions, and you can come up with your own understanding of it.”

But this project gets even more intellectual: He photographed the clothes on people who are often estranged from fashion, such as the workers in his studio. But he also used fellow activists as models, suggesting that clothes can be accomplices to social disruption.
