The film is a biographical drama whose narrative follows Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis as first lady in the White House and her life following the assassination of her husband, then President John F. Kennedy in 1963.

After already winning an academy award for Best Actress in Darren Oronofsky’s Black Swan (2010), there are rumours circulating that Portman may again be nominated for the Oscar for her portrayal of Jacqueline Kennedy which has received unanimous praise from critics. The film premiered at Venice Film Festival in September and also screening at Toronto International Film Festival.

The script was originally conceived as an HBO mini-series produced by Steven Spielberg following the events surrounding Kennedy’s assassination and his burial, concentrating on Jackie’s response to the horrific events at her most vulnerable state. The project quickly escalated into a feature film, with Portman confirming her role in summer 2015.

It has been reported that Portman pursued intense research of Jackie Kennedy in preparation for the role, including reading up to 20 different biographies of her, in addition to watching videos and listening to radio interviews. The film is primarily based on a series of interviews with the former first lady in Life magazine, which Portman drew heavily from in her research. The result is a haunting portrayal of a strong woman in the midst of personal and public tragedy. The film also stars Greta Gerwig, Peter Sarsgaard, and Richard E. Grant.
