Free Books for Life! Once in a Lifetime Literary Competition

Heywood Hill Book Shop, London

The Library of a Lifetime award from G. Heywood Hill bookshop in London offers free books for the rest of your life if you are the lucky winner a competition they are holding. The competition is open to entries worldwide; all you need to do is nominate which literary title means the most to you.

Launched on Friday by the independent bookshop in Mayfair, the competition is open until 31st October 2016. Deemed “the world’s first lifetime literary prize for readers”, the winner will receive a new hardback book a month for life. The book will be “hand-picked” and delivered anywhere in the world each month. “Before we start, we will sit down with the prize winner and find out their reading preferences, and any likes and dislikes. For the winner it will be an intellectual adventure of a lifetime,” said Karin Scherer, senior Heywood Hill bookseller who works on the shop’s A Year in Books programme. In order to win, entrants must choose which book has meant the most to them and why, with the winner chosen at random in a prize draw. The book must have been published in English (translations included) since 1936, when Heywood Hill first opened its doors. The competition has already seen entries from famous authors such as Kazuo Ishiguro, author of Remains of the Day, and William Boyd, author of An Ice Cream War.

Heywood Hill plans to use the compilation of submissions to create a crowd-sourced reading list covering the last 80 years of English language literature and non-fiction.
