The First Country to Ban Smoking

It was a matter of time. A Central Asian country prohibits entirely the sale of all tobacco products, promoting uniquely the fight against smoking.

Turkmenistan is the first country worldwide to impose a fine up to 1500 euros to stores if caught selling cigarettes. What an oxymoron, considering that Turkmenistan remains one of the most repressive countries in the world (like North Korea) which does not hesitate to infringe without exception all human rights. Diplomatic trick or just a policy that aims to increase life expectancy (which barely reaches 65 years)? For certainty, the black market rubs its hands, with every cigarette pack to be priced at 10 euros.
