The Swedish Association for Sexual Education (RFSU) has been fighting for the exculpation of sex in Sweden for the past 75 years and is for a world, where “sexuality is an expression of intimacy, joy and tenderness”. Bearing that in mind and all the sex-concerning taboos all over the world, it has announced an original competition, searching for a word for female masturbation.

And while men never had any “difficulty” in expressing themselves -moreover, there are more than one words/expressions-, while women always used implications to refer to their own one-to-one activities. So, voters have to chose among 34 words, like “klitta”, “pulla” and “selfa” and in June 2015, RFSU will chose the new word among the 3 most popular ones.

A spokesperson for the RFSU said: “We are trying to put sexuality on the agenda – the positive aspects, not just the negative ones like sexual abuse. We want to focus on the good parts, the lust. When it comes to masturbation, people mostly think about just men doing it and we don’t think of it as common for women. If we don’t have a word in the language, how can we even talk about it?”.

Maybe it is time we followed Sweden’s example for exculpation of sex once again?
