Halcyon Selects: Zhala – Slippin Around

Zhala, a breakthrough artist from Sweden, released her debut video clip for the song “Slippin Around” earlier this week on the most famous swedish music blog PSL, creating already a buzz around her name. Her identity is still a mystery, since so far we just know a few things about her, such as the fact that she was a backup singer for Lykke Li in her recent tour. From this first sample of her work, we can say that Zhala invokes elements from Fever Ray, iamamiwhoami with a taste of Santigold too, while the video clip stands out since it rather looks like a tribal psychedelic video installation, than a usual music video of its kind. Responsible for this great result, is an eccentric afro-swedish artist named Makode Linde, who recently stirred controversy with his provocative installation “Painful Cake” for World Art Day at Stockholm’s Moderna Muséet. After Niki and the Dove, Zhala is one more promising new female act added to the list of the best swedish pop artists.
