Alice Springs aka June Newton @ Helmut Newton Foundation, Berlin

Most friends of photography know the name Helmut Newton, but only few are familiar with the fact that his wife, June Newton, has left behind an important amount of work in photography, behind the pseudonym Alice Springs.

In 1970 the renowned photographer suffered from influenza and his spouse asked him to show her how to handle the camera and light meter and in his place photographed an advertisement for a French cigarette brand. The portrait of the smoking model would be the jumpstart of a new career, with shootings and covers for renowned fashion magazines and portraits of a roster of artists, actors and musicians.

A complete retrospective of the four decades that span her work is currently on show at the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin presenting photographs from advertising and fashion as well as nudes and portraits.
