At the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, 3D Systems showcased the world’s first 3D food printers. Called Chefjet and Chefjet Pro, the innovative machines are capable of producing an amazing array of delicious goodies in 3D geometric form. The machine uses an ink jet print head that’s just like the one you would find in your desktop 2D printer. It spreads a very fine layer of sugar then paints water onto the surface of the sugar and that water allows the sugar to re-crystalize and harden to form these complex geometries. The machines can also print milk chocolate or sugar in three flavors: mind, cherry and sour apple. The ChefJet is aimed at the domestic market and will retail at under $5000.
