An art piece “carved” on the sand of Sahara desert resembles a science fiction scene from the movie “Omen”. This gigantic installation is created by D.A.ST. Arteam collective which was founded in 1995 by installation artist Danae Stratou and architects Alexandra Stratou and Stella Constantinides in order to construct this unique project which was meant as an exploration of infinity against the backdrop of the largest African desert.
The installation is called “Desert Breath” expands in an area of 100.000 m2, in the eastern Sahara desert bordering the Red Sea in El Gouna, Egypt. For its construction, 8000 square meters of sand had to be displaced, while in the center of the installation a small artificial pool was created. This colossal artwork was completed in 1997 and now is in a state of slow decay but still visible from space.
