Amalgamated is studio markunpoika‘s new project for the realization of which they collaborated with Gallery FUMI and Faber-Castell. A mini series of vessels constructed from assembled pencils is set to “explore the relationship of a mass produced ‘tool’ and its individual purpose”. The designers took advantage of the pencils’ hexagon shape, to originally glue them together forming a solid block which was carved on a machine lathe into stylish vases with a unique ethnik twist. Studio markunpoika says that “the beauty of the pencil as an object seems to go unnoticed if utilised only for their primary purpose. ‘Amalgamated’ is a visual and tactile investigation by using pencils as a raw material. This holistic principle has been the fundament for creating this set of vases; let the pencils become a thing themselves”. Judging by the outcome, we couldn’t agree more. This series was created for Design Miami/Basel 2014.
