The third consecutive collaboration between the fashion designer Mary Katrantzou and the photographer Erik Madigan Heck, marks a stylistic and conceptual departure from the previous two collections of photographs which released in 2011, with an attempt at entering a truly surreal and bizarre world. In this new series, Mary’s clothing and Erik’s photographs converge as 11 disparate, yet collective works, correlating references to early Parisian Surrealist painters, Catholic iconography, and Greek mythology. The result is an abstract study of how fashion imagery can morph into new creative realms. The “Surrealist Ideal” attempts to follow a non-linear narrative revolving around fantasies and dreams, beginning with Mary Katrantzou AW12-13 print stories and expanded upon in these 11 works.
