Halcyon Selects: Julia Holter – Moni Mon Amie

Julia Holter releases one more brilliant album and it seems like this is her lucky year. A Los Angeles native, Holter, released her debut studio album “Tragedy” last year, including  songs inspired by Euripides’ Greek play “Hippolytus”, receiving generally favorable reviews. On March 8, she released her sophomore album “Ekstasis”, once more greek titled, making everybody believe that we already have one of the best albums of the year and comparing her with very important artists such as Laurie Anderson, Kate Bush or Joanna Newsom. Indeed, Julia Holter manages to impart us with her beautiful experimental bedroom pop melodies, creating dreamy soundscapes, directly from her own bedroom, where she actually recorded alone this album. A third music video from “Ekstasis”, was shot for “Moni Mon Ami”, directed by Yelena Zhelezov, who published an interesting explanation about it: “The video for “Moni Mon Amie” interprets the song as a lyrical appeal to the unattainable other, and a conversation that’s being had with oneself. The longing transforms the perception of the everyday, turning each moment into a poetic landscape in which the miniature and the gigantic become interchangeable. Julia plays the subject and the object of desire in this video.”
