Facts: The Kånken backpack was introduced in August 1978. At that time the shoulder bag was popular and 80 percent of the Swedish population reported that they occasionally suffered from back pain. Kånken was marketed as an alternative book bag for Sweden’s school children because it centered its weight evenly along the spine and allowed both hands to be free.
