Joel L. photographs the Hindu holy men and ascetics called “Sadhus” that live in Varanasi, India creating a photo series that exude a unique serenity and spirituality. Based in Brooklyn, the photographer captures their portraits and various snapshots of their daily lives in his collection “Holy men”. The photographer explores the ascetic lives of the Aghori, a sect known for engaging in postmortem rituals. As he states: “The Aghori have a profound connection with the dead. Death is not a fearsome concept, but a passing from the world of illusion.”
Filmmaker Cale Glendening, who accompanied Joel L. in his journeys managed also to shoot a documentary film featuring behing-the-scenes footage called “Beyond”.
