A much unexpected discovery took place when a group of Antarctic conservators discovered a box containing 22 unprocessed cellulose nitrate negatives which are believed to have been taken by the Ross Sea Party in between 1914 and 1917. The Ross Sea Party was a group of explorers who attempt to set up supply depots on the New Zealand side of Antarctica. Through their expedition their ship broke loose from the moorings and six men were left behind forced to survive by themselves for three years before they were rescued. The newly discovered negatives show views of Ross Island and McMurdo Sound as well as the expedition’s chief scientist Alexander Stevens.
