‘Cité de l’Océan et du Surf Museum’ by Steven Holl Architects and Solange Fabião

CITÉ DE L'OCÉAN ET DU SURF

The Cité de l’Océan et du Surf Museum, is a project by Steven Holl Architects in collaboration with Solange Fabião in Biarritz, France. Based on the concept ‘under the sky/under the sea’, the project intends to raise awareness of oceanic issues while exploring educational and scientific aspects of surf and sea and their role upon our leisure, science, and ecology. The project consists of a museum building, exhibition areas and a plaza.

The architects created a concave shape which is open to the sky and sea that contains the museum’s central plaza. The exhibition areas of the Museum of Ocean and Surf are given an ‘under the sea’ feeling with the use of conves structural ceilings. Also the building’s southwest corner, a skate pool is dedicated to the surfers’ hangout while an open porch connects to the auditorium and exhibition spaces inside the museum.
