The 2018 Pirelli calendar “beheads” racial stereotypes

This years’ artistic direction of the shoot for the world-renowned Pirelli calendar, was entrusted in the skillful hands of Edward Enninful, British Vogue’s newly appointed editor-in-chief and famous fashion photographer Tim Walker and set designer Shona Heath. Fashion, fantasy, fairytales and slight sinful edge, all twisted and tangled create pictures that captivate and titillate our senses.

Once again major names from all walks of life agreed to pose for the calendar and came together to tell the story of Alice in Wonderland in a different way. The stellar all-black cast which among others includes Naomi Campbell, RuPaul, Whoopi Goldberg, Adwoa Aboah, Lupita Nyong’o and Puff Daddy tackles the issue of pride and self-expression.

Enninful said that he felt a responsibility to ensure that the shoot was received in the way that it was intended: as a theatrical high-fashion celebration with equality and empowerment at its core, according to The New York Times.

The intention is to tell a classic story in a way that has never been told before.

“Any girl, whether she is black, white, Asian or Indian, should be able to have a sense that they, too, can be a heroine in their own fairy tale. If Alice looks differently here, then Alice can be anybody” These are the words of lawyer and model Thando Hopa who is living with albinism.
