Antigone Kouloukakos wants to act in a Greek film and win an Academy Award

Her attractive Mediterranean features make you want to meet her, while the way she speaks and her views make you want to be her friend. Antigone divides her life between Athens, Constantinople and Rome, carefully building up her acting career. We decided to meet with her in the centre Athens and ask her about everything she loves.

What do you love most about Athens?

It’s the sea that surrounds the city, in all shades. Blue, green, turquoise. Even when stormy and foaming, I often say to myself, “Well, it’s ok, Poseidon has gone mad today but, tomorrow is another day”. I love the bougainvilleas in Plaka, walking along Dionisiou Areopagitou Str., watching the sunset from Philopappou hill, the Attic sky at dusk. And the cats.

Same question about Constantinople.

The Bosphorus. Whether you are on the Asian side and it’s right there in front of you or the European side gazing the sea from afar, even when it’s raining or snowing, the Bosphorus oozes a magical energy. Also, I love the tulips. And the cats.

What’s the most extreme thing you’ve done?

The last film I did in Sweden. I have no clue of the outcome. I didn’t know the director nor any of the cast members. They chose me and I instinctively accepted.

Your next destination?

I don’t know. I like a city where I can move around. Constantinople, Rome, Athens. But I hope for something new and unique to come up again – like Sweden for instance – to take me to new adventures.

What are you going to do next, professionally?

As I have already done it so it’s a given, I’ll tell you what I would like to do. I’m more interested in the process rather than the actual outcome. So, I would like to work with a female director, namely Athina Rachel Tsangari. I believe she’s one of the best directors in the world and I feel very proud every time I watch her films.

What makes you smile?

Small everyday things, like a nice gesture from a stranger or a simple “good-morning”. I wake up smiling because that’s how I feel and I try to go to bed with a smile as well. I’s not working all the time but life is beautiful and I try to remember this always.

What’s the last movie you watched and you liked?

Kenneth Lonergan’s “Manchester by the Sea”. Also, a few days ago, I watched a film from 1985, called “Mania” by Yorgos Panopoulos. It was very moving. There are some great artists out there.
