MoMA Announces Retrospective Exhibition of Björk

A few days ago, the MoMA of New York announced a retrospective exhibition of Björk. Even though more details won’t be announced until fall, the information presented so far about what the exhibition-homage to her 20-year career will include, are enough. Its goal is to present the best way possible the solo career of the Icelandic artist, the way it has been fashioned through her offer to music, cinema, fashion and art, in a more general field.

Starting from her first solo album, “Debut”, up to the “Biophilia” of 2011, music and video clips, costumes, musical instruments and texts written by Björk and Icelandic writer Sjón Sigurdsson, will complete a narrative exhibition, equally “biographical and imaginatively fictitious”, as the press release states. Klaus Biesenbach, chief curator of the museum, is in charge of the exhibition and it is going to work as a music and cinema experience, inspired and designed by director Andrew Huang and Autodesk.

Björk Guðmundsdóttir was born in November 21st, 1965, in Reykjavik, Iceland. She became widely known in 1987, as the singer of Sugarcubes, thanks to their single “Birthday”. After the band’s breakup in 1993, she moved to London, starting her solo career. She has worked with many accomplished artists, such as Thom Yorke of the Radiohead, Antony Hegarty of the Antony and the Johnsons, the mainstream producer Timbaland, and poet Sjón. Her role in Lars von Trier’s “Dancer in the Dark”(2000) fulfilled her ambition to have a leading role in a musical, thanks to which she won the Best Actress Award at the 53rd Cannes Festival. The movie’s music theme “I’ve Seen it All” and its Oscar nomination, gave us the swan-dress, one of her top fashion moments.

The exhibition is scheduled to open in March 7th, 2015 and will be completed in June, 7th 2015.
