Νews that Michigan has criminalised sodomy has recently caused riot to the LGBT community. What has happened, exactly?
It all started when a new package of bills was voted last week,in order to protect animals from their owners’ abuse. “Logan’s Law”, as this package was named after the Siberian dog that was attacked with acid by its boss, contains Senate Bill 219, which is the bone of contention. According to this bill, proposed by Republican Senator Rick Jones and voted last week, “a person who commits the abominable and detestable crime against nature either with mankind or with any animal is guilty of a felony” that is punishable by up to 15 years in prison. Thus, Michigan’s Law against sodomy resurfaced (in favour of the protection of animal rights this time), upsetting the LGBT community, under the pretext that any act of anal sex could be considered illegal. However – and that was the main argument of the opposite side – Senate Bill 219 does not specify “same person” sex and should not therefore concern directly the LGBT community. However, when Jones was asked why he didn’t remove “mankind” from the bill, he replied that “no one wants to touch the terminology”…
Nevertheless, any prohibition of sexual act among people – including sodomy – has been ruled unconstitutional in USA since 2003.
