Back in 1854, a 16-year-old boy named Louis Vuitton, presented the first flat-bottom luggage with the well-known canvas, in the Parisian streets.
160 years later, still remaining one of the most fashionable items, Nicolas Ghesquière turned the huge classic luggage into a small trunk-bag, named “The Monogramm Petite Malle”. The trunk-bag was shown in Ghesquière’s first show for Louis Vuitton(Fall/Winter 2014). The bag comes in a variety of colors like red, gold, silver and black. As expected, there was the classic trianon canvas edition as well.
This luggage is not just a simple trunk. It is more than that. It brings nostalgic eras keeping great personalities inside. Christian Dior, Charles Aznavour and Salvador Dali owned one, besides the last one was inspired by the monogramm so he created his own “Daligramm”. Patric Louis Vuitton, Louis Vuitton’s great-great grandson, claims: “Once wide open, they are no longer trunks but albums”.
After the first release of the bag, artist Jenny Jokela created an animation video about the petite malle for anothermag.com. As she says: “I was inspired by Mary Poppins and Russian dolls-I wanted to play around with the idea of a bag that is in constant transformation, in the same way that the classic Louis Vuitton travel luggage comes in every imaginable size and form.”
